We get asked almost every week: “When is the best time to go sailing on the Costa del Sol?” And the honest answer, after years of mooring a classic wooden sailboat at Puerto Marina de Benalmádena, is that there’s no bad season—there’s a season for every plan. April’s sea is nothing like August’s, nor October’s like January’s. Each one has its own character, its light and its atmosphere, and choosing well depends above all on what you’re after: a swim, dolphins, peace and quiet or a sunset.

So instead of selling you one month as “the best”, we’re going to tell you what the sea is really like month by month on this coast, with its upsides and downsides. At the end you’ll find a summary table to decide in half a minute based on your priority.

Spring (March to May): the sea waking up

Spring is the season for those who want the coast without the crowds. The water is still cool (the sea takes longer to warm up than the air, so in March or April swimming is for the brave), but in return you get bright days, plenty of calm and a coast almost to yourself. It’s the time when you see the coastline at its best without the summer crush, and when sailing under canvas usually works because more regular breezes come in.

The main drawback is the variability: in spring the weather changes fast and you have to watch the forecast more closely. That’s why, if you come in these months, it’s wise to book with some leeway and keep a plan B for the date. The good news is that we almost always find a window of calm seas.

Summer (June to August): high season and guaranteed swimming

In summer the water is just right and swimming is a sure thing: it’s the most sought-after season, and also the one that fills up first.

Summer is what almost everyone pictures: warm water, guaranteed swimming and long days. From June to August the sea is at its best for taking a dip, the bow sundeck is used to the full and swim stops are the heart of the trip. It is, by far, the most sought-after season.

And there lies its only drawback: it’s also the busiest and the first to sell out. In the middle of August, the most popular trips (especially the sunset ones) sell out weeks in advance. If your trip falls in summer, book early: it’s the most useful advice we can give you. At midday the sun beats down and the shade on board is limited, so a hat, sunscreen and water are a must; we cover it in detail in our guide to the best time of day to set off.

Autumn (September to October): the best-kept secret

In September and October the sea is still warm from summer but the coast empties out: for many, the best time of year.

If we had to pick one season, it would be this one. In September and especially in October something magical happens: the sea is still warm from all the summer warmth, but the crowds have already gone. You get water that’s still pleasant for swimming, a quiet coast and a relaxed atmosphere that’s impossible in August. There tend to be gorgeous calm days, with the sea as flat as a mirror.

For many of our repeat customers, autumn is simply their favourite time. It’s the ideal moment for a couples’ trip without the crowds, to enjoy the sunset over the bay in peace, or to go for a high-seas sailing route making the most of those settled days.

Winter (November to February): sunset light and low season

Winter gives low light and early sunsets: not a season for swimming, but one for sailing and photography.

Here we have to be frank: winter is not a swimming season. The water is cold and the days are short. But that doesn’t mean the sea shuts down. The Costa del Sol has mild winters and many sunny days when going out to sail is a quiet luxury: the sea to yourself, beautiful low light for photos and sunsets that come early, around six in the afternoon. It’s the season for those who come to sail and take it all in, not to swim.

In winter we depend more on the forecast, and on some dates the sea conditions simply won’t be good. But when a calm day comes along, you have the whole bay to yourself. It’s also when a skippered boat charter at your own pace really shines, because you can decide as you go and make the most of the good-weather window.

Summary table: the sea month by month

Season Water temperature Atmosphere Ideal for
Spring (Mar-May) Cool Quiet, bright Seeing the coast without crowds, sailing under canvas
Summer (Jun-Aug) Warm, ideal Lively, high season Swimming, family, plans with kids
Autumn (Sep-Oct) Still pleasant Relaxed, few people Couples, sunsets, high seas
Winter (Nov-Feb) Cold, no swimming Quiet, low light Sailing, photography, taking it in

How to choose your month based on your plan

To put it practically: if your plan revolves around swimming, aim for the months from June to October. If you’re after peace and a good price, spring and autumn are your best bet. If your thing is sunsets and photos, any time works, but winter gives one-of-a-kind low light. And if you’re coming for the dolphins, the good news is they roam the bay all year round; we tell you when and where you’re most likely to see them in our guide to where to see dolphins in Málaga.

There’s another factor worth understanding: the wind. Two regimes rule this coast, the poniente (from the west) and the levante (from the east), and their strength varies over the year more than with the exact month. When it blows hard, the sea gets choppy and a comfortable trip turns into a rollercoaster; when there’s calm, the boat glides as if on glass but we’ll probably motor along because there’s no wind for the sail. Neither one is “better”: it depends on whether you’re coming for a calm swim or to feel the sailboat heeling over. The skipper checks the forecast every day and adjusts the plan to what the sea is really going to do, not to what the calendar says.

Whatever your month, there’s one factor that doesn’t change: the morning sea is almost always flatter than in the afternoon. If you also want to fine-tune the time, we go into it in the article on sailing with kids, where calm matters even more, and in the guide to planning your trip before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

When are you most likely to see dolphins?

Dolphins roam the bay of Benalmádena all year round—there’s no single season. They tend to be more active early in the day, when there’s less boat traffic. There are never any guarantees (they’re wildlife, not a show), but it’s a common encounter on our trips, and if it’s your priority, the dedicated dolphin-watching trip looks for them with the engine idling and without disturbing them.

Do you sail in winter?

Yes, whenever the forecast allows. The Costa del Sol has mild winters with many sunny days fit for sailing. It’s not a swimming season, but it is one to enjoy calm seas and an uncrowded coast. In winter we watch the weather with more leeway and sometimes the date has to be moved.

When are there fewer people?

Outside July and August. Spring and autumn offer pleasant sea conditions with far fewer people, and winter is simply low season. If you want to escape the crowds, avoid the peak of summer.

Whatever month you choose, the sunset trip is a safe bet at almost any time of year. It lasts 1h 30m and is one of those that works best whatever the season. Here are the details and availability:
